Renewing Your Permanent Resident Card in Canada

A Permanent Resident Card is an important status document that allows Canadian permanent residents to return to Canada by commercial transportation, such as airplane, bus, train, or boat.
If your PR card is expired or expiring soon, you may need to apply for renewal, especially if you plan to travel outside Canada.
IMPORTANT: If you are outside Canada and need to return to Canada, you cannot apply for a PR card from outside Canada. In this case, you may need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada.

Who May Apply?

You may apply to renew your PR card if you are a Canadian permanent resident and you are physically present in Canada at the time of application.
To qualify, you must generally meet the residency obligation, which requires permanent residents to be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the relevant five-year period, unless specific exceptions apply.

Why Proper Review Is Important

A PR card renewal application may appear simple, but it can become complicated if there are long absences from Canada, unclear travel history, missing documents, or concerns regarding residency obligation.
A poorly prepared application may lead to delays, additional document requests, or further review by IRCC.
