Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)

Returning to Canada Without a Valid PR Card

A Permanent Resident Travel Document may be required when a Canadian permanent resident is outside Canada and does not have a valid PR card to return by commercial transportation.

A PRTD allows a permanent resident to travel back to Canada when their PR card is expired, lost, stolen, or unavailable.

Who May Apply?

You may need a PRTD if you are a Canadian permanent resident outside Canada and you do not have a valid PR card.

To qualify, you must generally demonstrate that you meet the residency obligation, which usually requires at least 730 days of physical presence in Canada within the relevant five-year period, unless specific exceptions apply.

Why Proper Preparation Is Important

A PRTD application can be more complex if there are long absences from Canada, unclear travel history, family or employment-related exceptions, or concerns about meeting the residency obligation.

If the application is not properly explained, it may lead to delays, refusal, or further questions regarding permanent resident status.
