If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in a relationship with someone living abroad, you might be wondering: Can I sponsor my spouse from outside Canada? The answer is yes - through the Outland Spousal Sponsorship program. In this blog post, we’ll explore how it works, who qualifies, and why it might be the best path for your family.
Outland Sponsorship allows you to sponsor a partner who lives outside of Canada while the application is being processed. It’s often the preferred route for couples who are separated by borders and want to reunite permanently in Canada.
Even if the sponsored partner visits Canada during the application process, their main residence should remain outside the country.
To be eligible, you must:

✔ The sponsored spouse can travel freely in and out of Canada while the application is being reviewed
✔ Ideal if your partner currently lives in another country
✔ The right to appeal a refusal to the Immigration Appeal Division (not available in Inland cases)
To apply, you’ll need:
If you're a Canadian citizen currently living abroad, you'll need to provide documents that demonstrate your intent to return to Canada. These may include:
This depends on your unique circumstances. If your spouse is outside of Canada and needs flexibility to travel, Outland may be the best choice.
For those already living together in Canada, Inland Sponsorship could be an option though it comes with different timelines and travel limitations.
