What is the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) retirement pension?

The CPP retirement pension is a monthly, taxable benefit designed to substitute a portion of your income upon retirement. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you are entitled to receive the CPP retirement pension for the duration of your life.

How do I qualify for the CPP retirement pension?

To qualify for the CPP retirement pension, you must meet two conditions:

1. You must be at least 60 years old.

2. You need to have made at least one valid contribution to the CPP.

Valid contributions can result from work conducted in Canada or through the acquisition of credits from a former spouse or former common-law partner at the conclusion of the relationship.

If you have contributed to the Quebec Pension Plan

While the CPP operates throughout Canada, the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) provides similar benefits in Quebec. If any of the following apply to you, please get in touch with Retraite Québec:

- You exclusively worked in Quebec.

- You worked in Quebec and at least one other province/territory and currently reside in Quebec.

- You worked in Quebec and at least one other province/territory.

When is the best time to start receiving your CPP retirement pension?

The initiation time is at your discretion. Waiting longer results in receiving higher monthly payments. You can begin your pension any time after turning 60, although there's no financial advantage in waiting past the age of 70. The ideal time for commencement depends on your unique situation, encompassing health, finances, and retirement plans. Ultimately, the decision is yours.

The CPP retirement pension is intended to contribute to your retirement income, complementing the Old Age Security pension and your personal savings.
